What is natural environment teaching?

Natural environment teaching is an instructional approach that has gained attention among educators and practitioners who work primarily with children who have autism and developmental disabilities, particularly in early childhood and special education settings.

Natural environment teaching basics

Natural environment teaching, sometimes called NET, is an approach that uses a learner’s everyday surroundings, interests and routines to create opportunities for skill development. Rather than relying on structured, table-based instruction alone, NET can incorporate natural cues and motivators — such as a child’s interest in a toy, a snack or an activity — to prompt and reinforce learning in real time.

The approach is often associated with applied behavior analysis (ABA) and may be used alongside more structured methods such as discrete trial training (DTT). Where DTT typically involves repeated practice of a single skill at a table with a therapist, NET can take place during play, mealtimes, transitions or outdoor activities.

Core principles of NET

Several principles tend to guide NET in practice:

  • Learner motivation: Sessions may follow the learner’s interests rather than a fixed agenda, which can help maintain engagement.
  • Natural reinforcement: Reinforcers are often tied directly to the activity. A child who requests a ball, for instance, receives the ball rather than an unrelated reward.
  • Learning in context: Practicing skills in varied, real-world settings may help learners apply those skills across different environments and situations.
  • Incidental learning: Teaching moments can occur naturally throughout the day rather than being limited to scheduled sessions.

How NET may differ from traditional classroom instruction

Traditional instruction often follows a set curriculum delivered in a controlled environment with specific materials and a predictable sequence. NET, by contrast, can be more fluid and responsive to what the learner is doing or showing interest in at any given moment.

This doesn’t mean NET lacks structure, because instructors and therapists can plan target skills and collect data. However, the delivery tends to look different from a conventional lesson plan. A teacher using traditional methods might introduce vocabulary through flash cards and repetition, for instance, while a practitioner using NET might target the same vocabulary during a cooking activity by prompting the learner to name ingredients as they use them.

How prevalent is NET? 

Educators and therapists may use NET in a variety of settings, from early intervention programs to special education classrooms. Some practitioners use a blended model that combines structured and naturalistic instruction based on a learner’s needs and goals.

Elements of naturalistic instruction can also appear in general education contexts. In these cases, teachers may use student interests to guide instruction and embed learning into daily routines.

In a blended model, a learner might start with structured trials to acquire a new skill and then transition to NET once the skill is established, practicing it across different settings and situations. This kind of sequencing can allow practitioners to take advantage of the strengths of both approaches without relying on either one exclusively.

How does natural environment teaching work in practice? 

NET sessions can take place in a range of settings, including homes, classrooms, playgrounds and community spaces.

A natural environment teaching example might involve a child playing with blocks. If the target skill is being able to request something, the instructor could hold a block the child wants and wait for the child to use a word, sign or gesture before handing it over. Another example might involve a learner practicing turn-taking during a board game with peers, with the instructor prompting and reinforcing the skill as part of the activity.

Common interaction patterns in NET

Instructors using NET may follow a general sequence during interactions:

  • Observe what the learner is interested in or reaching for
  • Arrange the environment to create a teaching opportunity
  • Prompt the target skill using natural cues
  • Reinforce the response with something directly related to the activity
  • Record data on the learner’s response for tracking progress

The flexibility of this sequence can help practitioners embed multiple teaching opportunities into a single activity without disrupting the flow of play or routine.

During a snack break, for instance, a practitioner might observe that the learner is reaching for crackers, and so arrange two options on the table. This will prompt the learner to name which one they want, and the instructor will then hand over the chosen snack as reinforcement. That single exchange could address requesting, labeling and decision-making within a routine the learner was already part of.

What are the benefits and limitations of natural environment teaching? 

Natural environment teaching can offer advantages and disadvantages alike. 

Potential benefits

Because NET uses activities and materials a learner is already motivated by, it may support higher levels of engagement compared to more structured formats. Practicing skills in natural settings may help them transfer more readily to other environments, which can be important for learners who struggle with generalization. The approach can also be adapted for a range of age groups.

In early childhood, NET may focus on foundational skills such as requesting, labeling and turn-taking. For school-age learners, it might target social interactions, classroom routines and problem-solving. Adolescents may work on self-advocacy, community navigation and daily living skills. And across age groups, NET can be used to target communication, social, self-care and academic goals. 

Potential limitations

Natural environment teaching may be more difficult to implement consistently in settings with high student-to-teacher ratios. This is because it often requires close observation and individualized prompting. Data collection can also be more challenging in fluid, unstructured settings compared to table-based instruction.

It’s worth noting that some learners may benefit from a combination of NET and more structured approaches, particularly when first acquiring a new skill that requires repeated, focused practice before it can be generalized. Balancing both approaches within a single session or school day may require coordination among team members and clear documentation of which strategies are being used for each target skill.

Outdoor settings, for example, may introduce distractions that make it harder to capture a learner’s attention for a teaching moment. Weather, noise and the presence of other children can all affect the consistency of sessions, which is why some practitioners reserve certain target skills for more controlled environments.

What strategies can support effective NET implementation?

Implementing NET may involve planning, collaboration and ongoing data review. A few practical considerations can help practitioners structure their approach.

Planning and data collection

Even though NET may look informal on the surface, effective implementation can involve clearly defined target skills, measurable goals and consistent data collection. Practitioners may track how often a learner uses a target skill unprompted, how many teaching opportunities occur during a session and whether the learner generalizes the skill across settings.

This data can inform adjustments to prompts, reinforcers and session structure over time. A practitioner might notice, for instance, that a learner responds more consistently during outdoor play than during table activities, and shift more teaching opportunities into that setting.

Collaborating with caregivers and teams

Because natural environment teaching can extend beyond formal sessions, collaboration with caregivers, family members and other team members may help reinforce skills throughout the day. A therapist might coach a parent on how to create teaching opportunities during bath time or grocery shopping, for instance, so the learner gets additional practice in varied contexts. This kind of collaboration can also help caregivers feel more confident supporting skill development outside of formal therapy or classroom sessions.

Training and professional development

Practitioners who want to use NET may benefit from training in applied behavior analysis principles, prompting strategies and data collection methods. Professional development opportunities including coursework, supervised fieldwork and continuing education can help instructors and teachers build the foundational knowledge needed to implement the approach effectively.

Teachers working in inclusive or special education classrooms may also encounter NET principles through professional development workshops, school district training programs or graduate-level coursework in applied behavior analysis or special education methods.
